WWJ-TV and CW50 (WKBD-TV) took home seven awards during the Michigan Association of Broadcasters 31st Annual "Broadcast Excellence Awards" ceremony held Wednesday, March 11, 2009 in Grand Rapids, MI.
"Powering Michigan's Future," a WWJ-TV (CBS, Ch 62) hour-long special that looked at how the state can build new fortunes around alternative energy, won two categories: "Best, Special Interest Programming" and "Merit, Best Use of Medium." It was produced and hosted by Carol Cain with videography and editing by Paul Pytlowany.

Videographer Paul Pytlowany also received the "Merit, Photojournalist" award for his work on "Powering Michigan's Future" and other endeavors at WWJ-TV/CW50.

WWJ-TV also won "Best, Marketing Materials and Promo" for the "Hey Jim: Drive-Thru Weather Image" promo created by Andy Cotitsas.

CW50 received a "Merit, Marketing Materials and Promo" award for the "Contagious Watching Jingle" produced by Tim Sargent.

Two commercials created by Motor City Creative, WWJ-TV/CW50's in-house commercial production agency, were also honored.  The "Michigan Catholic Credit Union" spot by Charlie Forbes received "Best, Commercial" and the "House of Bedrooms - Escape" spot by Tim Lawlis won "Merit, Commercial."

"We are so incredibly proud of the work being created at our station," said Trey Fabacher, Vice President and General Manager of WWJ-TV/CW50 (WKBD-TV). "We're pleased our colleagues have acknowledged some of our efforts."

"Powering Michigan's Future" was the second special under WWJ-TV's award-winning "Eye On The Future" community effort, following the award-winning "Building Bridges: From the Great Lakes To The Great Wall" which focused on globalization.  "Powering Michigan's Future"  featured Governor Jennifer Granholm, GM's Bob Lutz, University of Michigan President Mary Sue Coleman and a who's who from business, politics and education talking about our future revolving around alternative energy.

"We're at a critical juncture in our region and state and our 'Eye' specials are intended to put a spotlight on what is taking place to position us for the 21st century amid a backdrop of incredibly challenging times," Fabacher said.

WWJ-TV and CW50 are part of the CBS Television Station Division, a division of CBS Corporation.
