July Interpretive Events at Kensington Metropark

At the Nature Center:

"Beasts on the Beach," Friday - Sunday, July 3 - 5 at Martindale Beach.  There's a lot of misinformation about snakes and turtles.  Stop by to sort out what is true and what isn't during this ongoing program. 

"Explorer's Day Camp," Tuesday - Friday, July 7 - 10, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Nature Center.  Enjoy a fun-filled week of nature activities for children ages 9 to 12.  Fee: $120 per child, $110 each additional child.  Pre-registration required.

"Nature's All-You-Can-Eat Buffet," Saturday, July 11 at 1 p.m., Nature Center.  There are loads of edible plants in nature.  Find them, plus take home some recipes.  Fee: $2 per person.  Pre-registration required.

At the Farm Center:

"Fun on the Farm," Thursday, July 9 at 10 a.m., Farm Center.  This program caters to the little ones.  This week the topic will focus on a farm tour.  Children will hear a story, meet characters from the book, followed by a craft or activity.  Fee:  $3 per child.  Registration not required.

"Farmer for a Day," Tuesday, July 14, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Farm Center.  This program is offered to children interested in working on a farm.  Participants will work alongside our farmers cleaning stalls, feeding and brushing animals, milking the cow, planting and more.  For children ages 7 to 15 years.  Fee: $25 per child.  Pre-registration required.  Pre-register by calling 248-684-8632.

"Farm Fantasy Camp," Saturday, July 18, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Farm Center.  This session is designed for adults 18 and older, who will help harness a team of draft horses, learn to plow with the team, and drive a horse-drawn wagon.  Working together, participants will reconstruct a small timber frame barn.  After a hard day of work, they will make homemade ice cream.  Fee: $25 per adult, limited to 20 participants.  Pre-registration required.

July Interpretive Events at Belle Isle Nature Zoo

"Hike by Bike – Lighthouses," Saturday July 11 and Sunday, July 12 at noon, Belle Isle Nature Zoo.  Bring a bike and enjoy iconic Michigan landmarks during this guided ride. Pre-registration required.

"Just for Homeschoolers – Mother of Pearl," Thursday, July 16 at 1 p.m., Belle Isle Nature Zoo. Explore the surprising story of native bivalves, including pretty shells, ugly names and industry. Pre-registration required.

"Small World Sunday – The Dirt ," Sunday, July 19 at noon and 2 p.m., Belle Isle Nature Zoo. An interpreter will unravel the mystery of dirt, digging deep into its past. Pre-registration required.

"Weekend Walk – Blue Lagoon," Saturday, July 25 and Sunday, July 26 at noon, Belle Isle Nature Zoo. Enjoy a woodland stroll and see the new life of out park on this guided walk. Pre-registration required.

July Interpretive Events at Stony Creek Metropark

"Rosco's Campfire in the Woods," Friday, July 10 at 7:30 p.m., Nature Center. Join Rosco for a night of magic, jokes and balloon animals.  Enjoy the campfire and hotdog roast after his performance.  Fee: $4 per person.  Pre-registration is suggested.

"Friday Night Canoe," Friday, July 17 at 8 p.m., Mt. Vernon Picnic Area.  The Voyageurs and the pelt of the beaver affected the course of Michigan history.  The great canoes and the men that paddled them left a legacy that influences us to this day.  Join a park interpreter and paddle a 34-foot Voyageur canoe to discover a bit of history and Stony Creek Lake life.  Fee: $3 per person.  Pre-registration and pre-payment required.

"Children's Appreciation Day - Nature's Wonders," Sunday, July 19 from noon - 3 p.m., Nature Center.  Celebrate the wonders of nature with games and crafts, and try to guess the date the snapping turtle eggs will hatch!  Participants will also get to pet some of our exhibit animals.  This fun-filled event is free, no registration required!

GENERAL INFORMATION

Individuals needing assistance in order to participate in these programs should contact the interpretive center at least 72 hours prior to the program.  A vehicle entry permit is required to enter any Metropark and is only $20 annually for regular admission, $12 annually for seniors or $4 daily.  General information can be found at www.metroparks.com or by calling 1-800-47-PARKS.
