About Les Miserables
Les Miserables is an epic story that recounts the struggle of the people of France in 19th century against the aristocracy.  The story follows Jean Valjean, who was imprisoned for stealing a loaf of bread, and Javert, the relentless Inspector who pursues him.  After Valjean is released from his 19-year term, he becomes an honest man, the mayor of a prosperous town and a loving adoptive father.  But because he is in violation of his parole, Javert is able to make it impossible for him to make a decent life for himself.  Only years later, after Valjean proves his mettle during a bloody student uprising and saves the life of a young man hopelessly in love with Valjean's adopted daughter, does the ex-convict finally feel fully redeemed and able to face Javert.
