  • Source: WWJ

Thursday, July 16th

Join The Henry Ford as it presents a special evening with legendary singer and "Queen of Rock," Wanda Jackson, Thursday, July 16 at 7 p.m. in Henry Ford Museum.  As a 2009 inductee into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame and one of America's first major female country and rockabilly singers, Jackson will give visitors a glimpse into the early days of rock through the lens of her celebrated career.  This event is for an 18-and-up crowd and is part of the Rewind series celebrating The Henry Ford's Rock Stars' Cars & Guitars 2 exhibit.  Doors open at 6 p.m., with the program beginning at 7 p.m.  Cash bar is available.  Tickets for Rewind events are $10 in advance and $15 at the door; for more information, call (313) 982-6001 or visit www.thehenryford.org.

Moderated by The Detroit News music and features writer Susan Whitall, attendees will have an opportunity to hear Jackson speak on her Grammy-nominated musical endeavors and participate in a Q&A session.

Jackson received her first guitar from her father in 1943, sang with country singer Hank Thompson's band in 1954, and by end of the decade, had become one of America's first major female country and rockabilly singers.  In 1955 and 1956, she was placed on a bill with Elvis Presley – who Jackson says, along with her father, encouraged her to sing rockabilly.  During a career that spans more than five decades, Jackson has topped the charts in the U.S, Japan, and Germany, was billed as one of Las Vegas' major attractions from the mid-1950s into the 1970s, had her own syndicated TV show, and played at many rockabilly and country festivals in Europe.

Jackson continues to tour all over the world to sold-out venues, and in April, she will be inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame following recommendations from Bob Dylan, Elvis Costello Bruce Springsteen and other icons of rock music.
