Obama administration: Enbridge knew of issues
The Obama administration said today it repeatedly warned Enbridge Energy Partners about safety issues along its Lakehead pipeline system, even calling officials to Washington earlier this year for a meeting on what it deemed "a series of major failures."
EPA issues notice on Michigan oil spill
The Environmental Protection Agency today issued a notice of disapproval to Enbridge Energy Partners for "deficient" work plans regarding the cleanup of possibly 1 million gallons of oil into the Kalamazoo River this week. Susan Hedman, regional EPA administrator, said the company that owns the pipeline was to submit various work plans per an EPA order on Tuesday. The agency issued an administrative order the same day for the company to take certain action, both emergency and long-term, she said. The company submitted long-term work plans Thursday. But, Hedman said, the work plans were "deficient" and Enbridge was asked to refile them no later than Monday. The notice was announced during a daily news briefing in Marshall, where the spill occurred. Enbridge President and CEO Patrick Daniel said the company has submitted cleanup plans, independent of the long-term plan referred to by the EPA. He said that longer term plan was returned to the company just before today's news conference. "I can assure you we will modify that plan until it satisfies the EPA," he said, adding that the company will correct the deficiencies. Daniel said the pipe has been exposed. He said he doesn't know what the cause of the leak is. Contact CHRISTINA HALL: 586-826-7265 or chall@freepress.com
